10-Year-Old Gives Birth to Baby Boy
A 10-year-old girl from Puebla, Mexico has delivered a baby boy after a 31-week pregnancy. The baby weighed 3.3 pounds and is in generally good condition as it recovers from pneumonia in an intensive care unit at a local hospital.
There's an investigation now to figure out how this girl got pregnant. The minimum age of consent in Mexico is 12, and abortion is illegal unless they can prove they were the victim of a sexual assault. Even then, termination is illegal after three months — which led to an 11-year-old being forced to deliver a baby last August fathered by her own stepfather, who had raped her repeatedly.
On a lighter note, can you imagine being a 13-year-old boy with a 23-year-old mom? The milf jokes alone would be enough to scar any kid for life.
UPDATE: A reader writes to qualify that Mexican abortion laws vary by state, just like in the U.S.
"17 out of the 31 states in Mexico have restrictions on abortion. Likewise, Mexico City has had first civil unions and then gay marriage legalized now for years, while other states still prohibit that. So the fact that you guys stereotype one restrictive conservative state in Mexico as all of Mexico, would be like stereotype all Americans as a bunch of pro-life, bigot, fag hating, racist cunts from Alabama."
Would anyone from Alabama like to respond to that?
UPDATE 2: Another reader writes to correct the correction:
"17 states in Mexico have laws defining life a beginning at conception, thus granting fertilized eggs all the protection of citizenship, including the right not to be killed (basically, the law that was too crazy for Mississippi). The remaining states' laws might not be that extreme, but still, the only place you can get a legal abortion is Mexico City)."
From a 2010 article in The New York Times:
One reason is a backlash against Mexico City's decision three years ago to permit legal abortion to any woman in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. After the Supreme Court upheld that law in 2008, 17 states passed constitutional amendments declaring that life begins at conception, even though abortion was already illegal everywhere but Mexico City, except in cases of rape or to save a mother's life.
