China Executes the Notorious 'Land Granny'
China: Not too hard on people who run over toddlers, but absolutely brutal when it comes to greedy civil servant grandmas with their hands in the cookie jar! A 50-year-old zoning official nicknamed the "land granny" was executed after having amassed a $23 million fortune in bribes and embezzled funds.
Luo Yaping oversaw land development in Fushun, a city in northeast China, and clearly found a way to make the system work for her.
A leader of the ruling Communist Party's anti-corruption agency said Luo's crime involved "the lowest ranked official, the biggest amount, and the most evil means," the China News Service said.
Needless to say, she isn't the face of Chinese grandmas the superpower wants to export to the rest of the world. For starters, she didn't know the lyrics to a single Lady Gaga song — and now she never will. [Reuters, Screengrab via Shangaiist]
