The Obama Reelection Strategy: Make Fun of Mitt Romney
The folks at Team Obama, like many, see Mitt Romney as the likely Republican nominee for president, and they're already plotting how to "destroy" him, limb by limb. How will they do it? Essentially, Obama will point at Mitt Romney, look to the audience, and whisper, "Just look at this fuckin' weird loser over here, amirite?"
Our inclusion of "weird" is no accident. That's the word that all the Obama advisers and consultants gave Politico in advance of this morning's much-discussed report. They're going to call Mitt Romney, who in reality is just a garden-variety rich New England dandy looking to purchase federal office, "weird." A dozen Obama flacks used this very word!
In a move that will make some Democrats shudder, Obama's high command has even studied former President George W. Bush's 2004 takedown of Sen. John Kerry, a senior campaign adviser told POLITICO, for clues on how a president with middling approval ratings can defeat a challenger.
"Unless things change and Obama can run on accomplishments, he will have to kill Romney," said a prominent Democratic strategist aligned with the White House.
The onslaught would have two aspects. The first is personal: Obama's reelection campaign will portray the public Romney as inauthentic, unprincipled and, in a word used repeatedly by Obama's advisers in about a dozen interviews, "weird."
They'll have to sharpen this up, if they want to take the Bush-reelection path to target Romney. "Inauthentic," "unprincipled," "weird" — is that the best they've got? My recollection from 2004 was that Bush surrogates just went on teevee everyday to call John Kerry a fag from fagland. Team Obama should consider labeling Romney, say, a Black Kenyan Marxist. Can Mittens prove that it's not true? No, he can't, because he's weird.
