John Shalikashvili, Retired Army General, Dead at 75
As if today weren't sufficiently SADurday enough: Retired U.S. Army general and former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman died today in Washington state. He was 75.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, Shalikashvili was actually of Georgian descent, and came to the U.S. as a teen with his family, who settled in Peoria, Illinois. Over the decades he rose through the military ranks, and in 1993 became the first foreign-born chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Two years later, he oversaw the U.S.'s involvement in the war in Bosnia. In more recent years he taught at Harvard and Stanford. In 2004, he suffered a serious stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He's survived by his wife and son. [LA Times, Image via AP]
