Netflix Might Be Killing Movie Piracy
The file sharing obsessives at TorrentFreak.com are convinced that Netflix is helping Americans become conscientious citizens who pay for movies rather than illegally downloading them free off BitTorrent. We are truly becoming moral titans.
The site notes that Netflix doubled its rate of growth to 3.3 million new subscribers per quarter this year and is now up to 22.8 million paid subscribers forking over more than half a billion dollars each quarter in subscriber fees. Meanwhile, there is evidence piracy is on the run. "We have some preliminary stats which show that the number of absolute US [BitTorrent] downloaders slightly decreased over the last year," TorrentFreak said in an update. "But more thorough research is obviously needed to make conclusive statements."
Which just goes to prove that Americans will do the right thing, once it becomes extremely cheap and easy. (Maybe.)
