America Is a Land of Luddites
All of the best technologies in the world have come from America: The Internet, microwave popcorn… other things. So why isn't America No. 1 when it comes to the digital economy? A new report says we're a measly fifth!
The annual report on the world's most "digitally connected economies" from the World Economic Forum is out, and here's the top 10, out of 138:
- Sweden
- Singapore
- Finland
- Switzerland
- US
- Taiwan
- Denmark
- Canada
- Norway
- South Korea
We were beaten by Switzerland? Must be all those digital watches.
But seriously, the U.S. needs to get its act together. According to the report, we rank 24th in percentage of households with a personal computer—behind Bahrain—and 52nd in science education. If we fall behind Canada we might as well just turn our superpower card into the U.N. and start specializing in exporting pickled fish to Sweden.
