Sony Writes Off Hack Attack as 'Maintenance'
The hacker collective Anonymous threatened to attack Sony web servers today, and sure enough Sony.com and Playstation.com are now down. But Sony is blaming the outage on "sporadic maintenance." Oh, is that what they're calling it these days?
In a statement and robot-voiced video, Anonymous said Sony "stuck your penises in... a hornet's nest" by prosecuting two hackers who cracked encryption in the PlayStation 3 to allow owners to run their own code on the videogame machine. Anonymous' hackers are believed to be running an easy to operate denial of service software tool called LOIC.
Unlike past, symbolic hack attacks by Anonymous, this one might actually be hitting Sony where it hurts: The PlayStation Network, through which Sony sells games and make actual money, has been suffering outages today.
