While MTV is facing the wrath of concerned parents, reluctant advertisers and infuriated fans of the original series, last night's episode demonstrates that the show is unique from the UK version, in that it is comparatively toned-down and less provocative.

With the character Tea, the show has a chance of proving it isn't a haphazard remake. This clip shows Tea's "crazy" night out with some girl from her class

The plot then gets very chaotic, much like Tea's family. While the writers try and cram as much complexity into the character, the acting doesn't quite support it. Long story short, Tea's one night stand has a boyfriend, Tea's looking for someone who deserves her attention and Tony tries to seduce her.

Thankfully, the incident with Tony is treated without the drama of questioning the character's sexuality. Of course, that illusion of sensitivity is destroyed with Michelle's remark about a bunch of guys touching each other. While the Great Battle between US vs UK versions may never be settled, the show is trying to be unique. But that doesn't exclude it from being mediocre TV.
