The New York Times has a year-end list of "The 110 Things New Yorkers Talked About"! Obviously, it is the most important article the paper has ever published. But they left some big things off!

Boy, is it nice to look on this list and think back to all those wonderful conversations I had with my fellow New Yorkers about "The rebirth of Don Hill's" (#21) and "Anna Wintour's girl crush on Blake Lively" (#56). I couldn't get a soda at the bodega without being dragged into a conversation about "The party of the year: Alexander Wang's carnival-themed bash held in a parking lot under the High Line during New York Fashion Week" (#44), which we all knew about, and were invited to, obviously. And I remember getting into a cab once, only to be thrown out when I tried to talk about the rising cost and diminishing utility of New York's public transportation system, which was not one of the 110 things New Yorkers talked about in 2010.

But the truth is, there are only 5 things New Yorkers ever talk about, and they are:

  • 1. How much better New York used to be.
  • 2. How much better New York is than anywhere else.
  • 3. Rent.
  • 4. Food.
  • 5. The best route to get back home.
