Live Blogging Top Chef All-Stars, Week 3
Did you know that today is National Lemon Cupcake Day? It is! So why not celebrate by helping us bake up a batch of tart observations about Top Chef: All-Stars? We're live-blogging it in the comments, so join us!
Here's all you have to do: Keep your laptop or keyboard handy while you watch the show—which airs at 10 p.m. Eastern on Bravo—and post a bunch of observations about it below this post. The rest of us will be doing the same. The result is a group-concocted live-blog on the show's proceedings—and there can never be too many cooks in this cyber-kitchen!
Last week's live blog was full of observations. We noticed, for example, that most of the male "all-stars" have gained weight since their prior seasons—except for Richard Blais, who looks like he donated all his spare body fat to the other guys. Many of us wondered if Jen was drunk during her surly swan song. Commenter phlox wondered whether Fabio has started styling his hair with extra-virgin olive oil. And many commenters said many funny things—a few of which I've assembled in this collection of highlights from last week's live blog.
Before we get started, I want to run through a few chef nicknames. Last week I shared some of the new ones we've coined so far this season; now, for additional live-blogging background purposes, here's a rundown of some nicknames we already gave a few of these chefs in prior-season live-blogs:
- Angelo is "Full-on Monet" because he looks better from a distance than up close.
- Jamie is "Rainbow Tats," because she has lots of tattoos, and once declared herself part of a "Team Rainbow" of gay-and-lesbian chefs.
- Carla is "Hootie Hoo," because she likes to say that.
- Mike I. is "The Jersey Douche," because he is one.
OK, study that list, because there will be a quiz later. And while you do, let me run through a few things to watch for on tonight's episode:
- The quickfire challenge will be one of those ever-popular "team relay race" affairs—and I expect that this one should be particularly entertaining with this group of chefs.
- At one point, Marcel will shout "This is so much fun!"—and then start beating his meat. He'll also confide that he's learned a special meat-beating technique that works really well—and I believe him, because he looks pretty good at it.
- The chefs will have to prepare food at four notable New York restaurants—including WD-50, the LES eatery owned by frequent Top Chef guest Wylie Dufresne. It seems like Dufresne shows up on this show more often than Gayle King shows up on Oprah, doesn't it?
Anyway, it's time for all of use to show up down in the comments section, because the show's about to start. See you there!
