We did not attend Saturday night's Homocon 2010 in New York, the big party organized by the gay conservative group GOProud. We had recently seen the documentary "Catfish" and so had already used up our weekly allotment of confusion and terror. But from Talking Points Memo's account of Ann Coulter's keynote speech, it sounded like a blast!

First, the comedy portion of the evening:

First, she ran down the stereotypical stand-up comedian's list of reasons [to oppose same sex marriage], including that lacking the legal right to marriage allows the less-committed partner to weasel out of it. But in a more serious note, she parroted the losing arguments of the lawyers supporting California's Prop 8 and told the crowd that the reason she opposes (and they should oppose) same sex marriage is that it is strictly for procreation.

Then the "series of racially insensitive remarks" part of the evening: Coulter told the assembled conservagays that the 14th Amendment only applies to African-Americans, so shut up about gay marriage.

"Marriage is not a civil right. You're not black."

And she also said some stuff about the decline of marriage among blacks being attributable to "the subsidization of single parenting" by welfare.

The way TPM tells it, Coulter flopped. Her anti-gay marriage remarks were "not well-received by much of the crowd." Ditto the race jokes. While she's the foremost conservative comedian of our time, Ann Coulter made the rookie mistake of misreading her audience. Conservative gays don't hate black people: They hate taxes! (And themselves, apparently.)
