'New Republic' Editor Unsure If Muslims Deserve First Amendment Rights
Longtime Muslim-despising New Republic editor-in-chief Marty Peretz has come through again. He's disappointed that liberals characterize hatred or mistrust of Muslim-Americans as a problem, when Muslims have no respect for human life and maybe shouldn't have First Amendment rights.
Writing on his New Republic blog, The Spine — which no one really reads except to check every few weeks for more racist or anti-Muslim hilarity — Peretz concludes at the end of a long, annoying post about the anti-Muslim sentiment that's come to light during our National Conversation over a proposed Islamic community center in Lower Manhattan:
But, frankly, Muslim life is cheap, most notably to Muslims. And among those Muslims led by the Imam Rauf there is hardly one who has raised a fuss about the routine and random bloodshed that defines their brotherhood. So, yes, I wonder whether I need honor these people and pretend that they are worthy of the privileges of the First Amendment which I have in my gut the sense that they will abuse.
Nope, it never occurred to him that he was abusing various First Amendment rights while writing this post.
