John Kerry Remains Wealthiest Member of Congress
The Hill has released its annual wealthiest members of Congress list, and for the second consecutive year, ol' horse-face John Kerry wins! (Although it's mostly his wife's money.) But what other members should you shake your pitchforks at this year?
John Kerry's wealth increased $20 million dollars in 2009 to $188.6 million, according to his financial disclosure form. But as The Hill notes, "the bulk" of that sum is credited to his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry, who kept that "ketchup money" after her first husband, John Heinz, died in a 1991 plane crash. Still... uh... good for John Kerry! He'll make his own money, someday.
Number two on the list is tiresome California Rep. Darrell Issa, with $160.1 million. You know how he made that fortune, by the way? Perhaps you're familiar with the original Viper car alarm system, which made cars freak out and say "PLEASE STEP AWAY FROM THE CAR" if you came too close? Not only was that Darrell Issa's product, that was Darrell Issa's voice.
Interestingly, Sen. Herb Kohl — yes, that's Kohl's department stores — has $254 million in assets, mostly from his ownership of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, but he didn't make the list! The Hill explains:
But under The Hill's methodology, his team ownership only counts for $50 million, the highest range reported on the congressional financial disclosure form. Because of high liabilities on his 2009 form, Kohl actually is listed as being more than $4.6 million in debt on the 2009 form.
Ha ha, sucker. Anyway, here's the top 10:
1. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.)
2. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.)
3. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.)
4. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.)
5. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas)
6. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.)
7. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.)
8. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.)
9. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.)
10. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.)
A banner year for Democrats!
