A volcano that has been dormant for 400 years erupted on the Indonesian island of Sumatra today, sending smoke and ash a mile into the air, and forcing the evacuation of at least 10,000 people.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific's "Ring of Fire" — a wide-reaching rim of volcanic activity — and also has the most active volcanoes in the world. Mount Sinabung last erupted in 1600. One person is reported to have died from the eruption, while officials from Indonesia's National Body for the Co-ordination of Disaster Management told Al Jazeera that "the situation on the volcano is now back to normal."
