The 2010 Emmy nominees were announced this morning and they were full of old standards (Mariska Hargitay... again) and surprises (a show on USA that isn't Monk got a nomination!). Let's take a look at the list, shall we?

The full list, via Variety, is posted down below. But what does it say? Well, Glee got recognized big time, with an unsurprising Best Comedy nod, slots for Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, and Jane Lynch, and, in an actual surprise, little pixie Chris Colfer. Those dramatic scenes with Mike O'Malley probably helped him... secure a comedy nomination. Oh, Emmys. So confusing.

Modern Family also made off like a bandit, landing in the Best Comedy category and securing nominations for Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Eric Stonestreet (poor Ed O'Neill must feel a little left out). Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara also got nods. So really O'Neill is the only principal who didn't get recognized. I wonder what happened there. Years-old residual Married with Children stink? It's possible.

Also recognized in the comedies were Amy Poehler (yay!), Neil Patrick Harris (boo), and Jim Parsons (yay if you're into that sort of thing). Also, Tony Shalhoub got what has to be his final Monk nomination. That show is done, right? No more ever again? Please tell me this is the last year that Tony Shalhoub will ever be nominated for Monk. Please.

Moving on to the drama, let's dispense with the champagne popping right now. Though their show was not recognized in the Best Drama category, both Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton were finally Emmy-recognized for their sublime work on Friday Night Lights. Goooo Panthers! Or is it Lions now? Either way! This is so good. They probably won't win — I expect it will be Julianna Margulies (folks are happy to see her back) and Matthew Fox (adieu, Lost) — but at least the notoriously tone deaf Emmys have finally listened to all the critical clamoring and said "Oh, yeah, hey, look. That's a really good show with really excellent acting." Now if they could only go back in time and nominate The Wire for one single fucking award (I think they got one writing nod, once), that would be great.

Elsewhere in the dramas, you've got your requisite Hargitay and Hugh Laurie noms, Sharon Gless from Burn Notice got a surprise nod, the delightful Christine Baranski and Archie Panjabi were both recognized for The Good Wife, as was the much-maligned Rose Byrne from Damages.

One final bittersweet moment? What's there in the Best Variety/Comedy slot? The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. Eat that, Jay.
