A bill passed the NY state senate yesterday that would make assault on a taxi driver punishable by up to 25 years in jail.

This is a good thing. Those guys can be a pain in the ass, but they have a potentially lethal job. They have to deal with drunks and ladies who lunch, while making a pittance. If you have trouble with a cab driver, all you have to do is demand they pull over and then get out of the car. If you assault the driver, you should go to jail for a long, long time.

There are many things that taxi drivers do that should be punishable. Not putting on the AC on a 100 degree high humidity day....smelling like they have not had a bath in 6 months....smelling like smoke....and not running into those damn pedicabs.

I'm all for protecting people who work in the public sector, but 25 years? Really? Where do New Yorkers think they are going to get the money to pay for such long prison terms?
