The Mad Men Are Out to Get Matt Damon
Here's a trailer for the romantic thriller The Adjustment Bureau, based on the Philip K. Dick story about hat-wearing, Mad Men-esque fates who control all the destiny in the world. It looks like it could be cheesy or wonderful.
Wonderful because Matt Damon just keeps getting more likable, and Emily Blunt is typically welcome. Add John Slattery, Terrence Stamp, and Christoph Waltz to the mix, and that is a delightfully interesting, white-haired cast! But it could be cheesy because of the love-conquers-allism and stuff. PKD's work usually makes for interesting, if not perfect movie adaptations — Minority Report, A.I., Total Recall, — though for every Blade Runner, there's a Next. Or a Paycheck. Add in the curious un-Dickian (there's just no comfortable way to use his last name, is there?) sentimental stuff and it could be a strange mix. Plus, hats. Lots of hats.
George Nolfi is a reasonably experienced screenwriter (The Bourne Ultimatum, Ocean's Twelve) but a first-time director, so it's hard to say for sure what he'll add to the proceedings. Though from the looks of the trailer he's got a little Paul Greengrass, a dash of Alfonso Cuaron, and a pinch of, like, a more romantic Tony Gilroy in him. Is that a good thing? We'll find out in September!
