Heidi Montag made headlines and drew criticism months ago when she underwent massive plastic surgery that severely altered her appearance. Tonight's premiere of the final season of The Hills saw Heidi coming home for the first time since her transformation.

I've criticized this show and its starlets in many ways since the first time I saw it. I think it is a dangerous misrepresentation of a fantasy lifestyle and a shameless depreciation of females in both a social and professional way. In this episode, we see a mother who is horrified at seeing her daughter for the first time after she has been permanently physically altered. This may be the most reality The Hills has seen during its entire run. It makes me uncomfortable to know that a "reality show," which exists in a very bright spotlight and is emulated in its targeted demographic, has come to this. This show used to be about bleached blond girls harmlessly, if not pointlessly, running around Los Angeles, creating fake problems for themselves. Tonight, we have people accusing one another of drug and alcohol abuse issues.

How can something that was once aspirational content become such a social debacle?
