A specialist in what is known as "shock art" the half-Honduran, half-Cuban, all-Latino lovin', Serrano was born in 1950 in New York City. He studied at the Brooklyn Museum and Art School, and spent time slaving for the man as an advertising art director in the 70's before creating his first original pieces.

Not exactly a red-state favorite, button-pushing photographer Serrano is best known for his 1997 piece Piss Christ, which depicts a plastic crucifix submerged in his own pee. (It's in Adam Sender's collection, in case you're wondering.) Others of his works have featured photographs of the homeless and people in the midst of sexual acts, including a three-part series called "Blood and Semen" that featured, you guessed it, photographs of blood, menstrual blood, semen, and breast milk. Not surprisingly, his exhibitions often invoke angry responses, and have more than once been vandalized.

He's represented by veteran gallerist Paula Cooper.
