Live Blogging Top Chef Masters, Week 2
Are you master of your own live-blogging domain? No? Of course not — nobody is! So why fight it? Just turn on Top Chef Masters, head for the comments section under this post and start master-blogging with us!
Any commenter can join this live blog, once the show gets underway. That happens at 10 pm Eastern — unlike last week, when Bravo fooled me by airing the season premiere at 11, after I'd told everyone it started at 10. But even with the one-hour delay, things got off to a rip-roaring start. To see a selection of the many witty comments from last week's live blog, click here.
As for tonight, we'll get to meet a new group of chefs—five this time, rather than six like last week. Why? Damned if I know. I still can't figure out why last week's group was forced to compete in randomly assigned teams. Many things about the show's format this season are mysterious to me. But one thing I do know is the identities of the chefs we'll see tonight, so here's a quick rundown:
- Marcus Samuelsson is a James Beard-award-winning chef who was raised in Sweden, but born in Ethiopia. So he's just another one of those black Swedish chefs you see all the time.
- David Burke owns a string of restaurants with names like David Burke Townhouse, David Burke Prime and David Burke at Bloomingdale's. He is also the inventor of culinary products such as David Burke Gourmet Pops and David Burke Flavor Sprays. His name, by the way, is David Burke — just in case you missed that.
- Carmen Gonzalez, a native of Puerto Rico, owns a Florida restaurant called "Carmen the Restaurant." If she ever writes a cookbook, I wonder if she'll call it "Carmen the Cookbook"?
- Thierry Rautureau, born in France, owns Rover's in Seattle. According to his Bravo bio, he's known as "the Chef in the Hat." So, yeah … he'll be the asshole wearing the hat. You can't miss him.
- Monica Pope, one of two lesbian chefs competing this season, owns a restaurant in Houston called "Beaver's." No, really — I didn't make that up. Some jokes just write themselves, don't they?
Ok, so to prepare for tonight's live blog, I watched the preview clips of the coming episode. Here are three things I learned from them:
- The main challenge will be to cater a birthday party for actor Mekhi Phifer who, we are told, likes soul food.
- "Mekhi" does not rhyme with "Becky." Apparently, it's pronounced "Mc-EYE." Am I the only one who didn't know that?
- Carmen will make a big mistake that may cost her the competition — something I like to call "pulling a Moonen." Viewers of last season will know why.
So there will be excitement! And soul food! So get your exciting souls down into the comments section and let's get this party started!
