Who

Along with Richard Frankel, Steven Baruch and Thomas Viertel, Routh is a partner in Richard Frankel Productions, one of Broadway's most powerful production companies.

Backstory

Marcellin Routh started his show biz career as a theater press agent, and got into production management via administrative gigs at venues like the O'Neill Theater Center. In 1985, he made the wise move of partnering with Richard Frankel, Steven Baruch and Thomas Viertel to start the Richard Frankel Group. Since their first show, the Broadway run of Penn & Teller, the group has produced some of the biggest shows on and off Broadway over the past two decades. Routh branched out in 1991 when he teamed up with Simone Genatt to co-found Broadway Asia, a company that holds the Asian licensing rights to the Rodgers and Hammerstein library and takes Broadway shows (like Avenue Q and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) on tour to Asia. Broadway Asia entered into a formal partnership with RFP in 2004.

Of note

Over the years RFP has bankrolled a string of successes, including Tony Kushner's Angels in America; Terrence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; Mel Brooks's The Producers, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick; Hairspray (based on the movie by John Waters, with music by Marc Shaiman); and Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and Company. All together, the Frankel Group's shows have won 33 Tonys and 4 Grammys. Routh himself has been inducted into the NYU Business School Entrepreneurs' Hall of Fame, received the Brooklyn College Managers for the Arts Award from Brooklyn College, and the Robert Whitehead Award as Outstanding Commercial Theater Producer.

On the side

Routh has been an adjunct professor in Brooklyn College's graduate theater department for more than a decade. He also serves as the president of the League of Off-Broadway Theaters and Producers.

Personal

Routh lives in a Chelsea loft with his partner, art dealer Asher Remy-Toledo, and their two sons. The couple hosted a glam party at their three-story home/gallery in February 2007, celebrating the tenth anniversary of Freedom to Marry Day.
