Comments of the Day: There Goes the Gayborhood
Today we looked at dwindling gay ghettos and flipped the script by telling you straights what to do for once. It sparked many comments! Let's take a look at a few, shall we?
You're the same person as the Yuppies you despise that come in and take your neighborhood. How do you think the people who have to move out and go another 20 minute Subway ride further from their crappy service job in the city serving you lattes and scones feels?
You don't make hoods better, you make them different. And in the meantime you displace thousands of people making their lives harder since they have every disadvantage already (bad education, kids, low income) and you exploit this. And then take it a step further, you make a huge profit selling the house to the yuppies that come in after you.
Locusts.
As a straight, white, male...I am just mad that we don't get any special words.
I personally see this as a bit of prejudice. Where are the meetings where you all get together and decide which terms are offensive? I want to be invited. I keep asking and no one will tell me. I want to pick a special word for straight white males that is considered taboo and infinitely offensive. ("cardy")
Just as an aside, gay people seem to have gotten a bit greedy. According to this article there are 3 words that non-gays can't use, and we all know there are even more. Most groups get one term, two max! Why does the gay community get 58?
I remember one Sat night seeing a family of four in a car at a red light gaping in astonishment/horror as a cigar chomping leather daddy stomped by in boots, vest, hat, shades and assless chaps. The looks on their faces reminded me of ones on the actors faces in the scene from Jurasic Park were the T-Rex comes crashing out of its paddock (and it was as funny/awesome as it sounds)
Anybody else prefer "Geighborhood"?
