Francis Greenburger
Who
Greenburger chairs Time Equities, one of the biggest co-op conversion firms in the city. He also runs the literary agency Sanford J. Greenburger Associates, which was founded by his father.
Backstory
Raised in the Forest Hills section of Queens, Greenburger is the son of Sanford Greenburger, the legendary literary agent who founded the lit agency Sanford J. Greenburger Associates in 1932 and represented Franz Kafka and Jean-Paul Sartre. As a kid, the younger Greenburger demonstrated an interest in the family business—at 14, he was raking in about $20,000 a year buying books wholesale and then reselling them. He assumed control of the agency after his father's death in 1971, but soon started to dabble in real estate, too. After successfully sub-letting a portion of his West 59th office, he founded Time Equities in 1975.
Of note
Greenburger now divides his time between his literary agency and his development firm. At the agency, he oversees eight agents, who represent the likes of Dan Brown, Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Lynn Hightower, and Nelson DeMille. (One star agent at the firm, Elyse Cheney, went out on her own in 2005.) As the chairman of Time Equities he controls roughly 18 million square feet of office, industrial, retail, and residential space in 25 states and four Canadian provinces. Historically, many of Greenberger's properties have been smaller buildings which he then subdivided. But his ambitions seem to be on the rise. Time Equities is now building a 500,000-square-foot mixed-use development at Hoyt-Schermerhorn in conjunction with Abby Hamlin's Hamlin Ventures, as well as a luxury condo called Bermuda Cay in Florida. Also in the pipeline for Greenberger: a 240,000-square-foot condo conversion project at 25 Maiden Lane, and a 63-story condo hotel at 50 West Street.
Campaign trail
Greenburger is on the finance committee of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. He's donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates over the years.
On the side
In 1992, the art-collecting Greenburger founded Art-Omi, a three-week summer artists' residency which invites 30 artists from around the world to a retreat located along the Hudson River in upstate New York.
Personal
Greenburger's first wife, Judy Willow, died in 1999; the couple had three children together Lee, Morgan, and Noah. (A fourth child died in a swimming pool accident in 1990 at age two.) He has an additional child with his current wife, Isabelle; the family lives in the Village. His nephew Michael Greenburger is an acquisitions director at Time Equities.
