Who

One of the nation's leading experts on clinical cancer treatment and breast cancer, Dr. Larry Norton is deputy physician-in-chief for breast cancer programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Backstory

The son of a travel editor at the Post, Norton helped pay his way through college by working as a magician. He went on to Columbia Medical School and completed residencies at Jacobi and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Following a stint at the National Cancer Institute, Norton moved back to New York, practicing and teaching at Mount Sinai before moving to Cornell. Now a professor of medicine at Weill Cornell and the deputy physician-in-chief at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Norton is one of the most influential cancer doctors in the city. The breast cancer center he oversees takes in more than 90,000 patients each year and the hospital performs surgery on close to 3,000 women, making it the busiest such center in the U.S.

Of note

Norton has made several breakthroughs in breast cancer research, using mathematical models to predict the behavior of tumors. He's also become popular for his treatment methods, which minimize the side effects of chemotherapy by using smaller doses and more frequent sessions. (Among his more well-known patients: Linda Ellerbee, Evelyn Lauder, and, until she passed away, Linda McCartney.) Norton is now planning to unveil a new facility, a 16-story Breast and Imaging Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering, which is set to be finished in 2009. To expand the center's activities, Norton and MSK president Harold Varmus have cultivated donations from Evelyn Lauder—one of the hospital's biggest fundraisers for more than a decade—and Mort Zuckerman, who gave MSK $100 million in 2006.

Board game

Norton serves as chairman of the board of scientific advisors of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which was founded by Evelyn Lauder. Trustees of the foundation include Kinga Lampert (the wife of Eddie Lampert), Bette-Ann Gwathmey (wife of Charles Gwathmey), Sandra Krakoff (mother of Reed Krakoff), Wendi Rose (daughter of Marshall Rose), Cynthia Lufkin, Ellen Levine, Marisa Acocella Marchetto, and Muriel Siebert.

Personal

Norton has been married to his wife Rachel for more than 30 years. They have two grown daughters, Margot and Julia. The Nortons live on East 84th Street.
