Who

Monn runs one of the city's leading event planning companies and enjoys the distinction of being one of Anna Wintour's least favorite people in town.

Backstory

The Pennsylvania native moved to New York in 1982 to work in fashion, eventually opening a hair accessories boutique in Bergdorf Goodman. After dabbling in the jewelry trade and interior design for a number of years, he planned his first big event in 2001, orchestrating the (second) wedding of corporate titan Saul Steinberg's daughter Laura. (Her first marriage was to Jonathan Tisch.) Major events he's put together since have included the opening of the Time Warner Center, the reopening of the Tiffany flagship, the New York City Ballet's opening night benefit in 2005, the Guggenheim's fall gala in 2006 and '07, and the reopening of Miami's Fontainebleau hotel in 2008. Monn handled the wedding of Kristin Fisher (adoptive daughter of real-estate heir Bobby Liberman) and Charles Allen (son of financier Herbert Allen). He also planned a wedding party for publicist Susan Magrino. But Monn will do funerals, too. Last rites he's overseen: Henry Grunwald, the former editor of Time magazine (and father of Mandy Grunwald) and A. M. Rosenthal, the former executive editor of the New York Times (and the father of Andrew Rosenthal).

In print

Monn has authored two books: Worry Free Wedding Planner and 365 Ways to Prepare for Christmas.

Drama

After Anna Wintour ditched party planner Robert Isabell for the 2006 Costume Institute Gala at the Met, she hired Monn. But when Vogue failed to mention Monn's efforts in the issue that covered the glossy event, Monn publicly upbraided Wintour. The icy editrix replied in kind, blasting Monn for overcharging for a charity event.

Habitat

Monn lives with his King Charles spaniel, Sammy, in a 1,400-square-foot one-bedroom in Chelsea.
