Eric Goode
Who
A hotelier, restaurateur, and nightclub entrepreneur, Goode—along with his partner, Sean MacPherson—creates fashionable establishments for fashionable people.
Backstory
The San Francisco native arrived on the New York scene in 1984 when, at the age of 26, he opened Area, the "ultraglamorous nightclub by which all clubs are now judged," according to Paper. (Famously, the club's décor changed every six weeks thanks to creative director Serge Becker.) Goode also teamed with Becker to open the equally zeitgeisty MK Bar in 1988 (André Balazs was an investor), and spent the 1990s expanding further, bankrolling half a dozen restaurants and nightspots including Bowery Bar and Time Café.
In 2001, Goode opened one of his most ambitious spots, partnering with LA nightlife impresario Sean MacPherson to take over three taxi garages on Tenth Avenue, converting them into the scene-y Chelsea restaurant The Park. The duo branched out into the hospitality business two years later, when they teamed up with Richard Born and Ira Drukier to open the Maritime Hotel on 17th Street. Built for the National Maritime Union and once occupied by Covenant House, it cost the four partners $19 million to acquire the property and another $13 million to refurbish over the course of two years.
Of note
Goode and MacPherson have been plenty busy. In late 2006, they partnered with Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter to open the Waverly Inn, porting over the chef from the Maritime's La Bottega to attend to the menu. In March 2007, they did their part to prop up the Bowery renaissance with the buzzed-about Bowery Hotel, featuring an Italian restaurant designed by Taavo Somer, Gemma, on the ground floor. They also unveiled a much smaller 15-room hotel called the Lafayette House, which they'd originally conceived as a guesthouse for out-of-town friends. Most recently, the duo transformed the Hotel Riverview on Jane Street in the West Village—which houses Armin Amiri's Cuban boite Socialista—into the budget Jane Hotel.
Off hours
Goode is a turtle aficionado, strangely enough. The Park used to be home to a number of reptiles, which were kept in a special enclosure outfitted with filtration equipment and UVA lighting. (In 2004, PETA expressed its concern about keeping the animals in such "unhealthy" surroundings.) He owns a three-acre compound in Ojai, California, where he shelters some 300 endangered tortoises.
Personal
Goode was involved with Vanity Fair's Elizabeth Saltzman a number of years ago, and in the 1990s he dated actress/model Rachel Williams and Naomi Campbell. These days he lives with his girlfriend, Miye McCullough, in Noho. He keeps his collection of turtles on his building's roof.
No joke
With his onetime collaborator Serge Becker, Goode co-directed two Nine Inch Nails music videos, "Pinion" and "Help Me I Am in Hell." The pair also co-directed a video, "Oblivion," for the pop metal band Terrorvision.
