With her Drag Race in full effect and new rounds on the talk show circuit, it is time to remember RuPaul's roots. Here, she and other drag luminaries (Lady Bunny!) star in Tom Rubnitz's 1990 counterculture short masterwork, Pickle Surprise.

Rubnitz was closely associated with the late 1980s East Village drag scene, and was an early influence on the emerging club kids of that time. His full-length documentary feature, Wigstock: The Movie, featured the late, great Leigh Bowery "giving birth" to his wife live onstage.
