The Gay Superbowl Commercial That Wasn't
CBS is still undecided on whether or not to air a gay-themed commercial during the upcoming Super Bowl. The spot, from the dating/networking site ManCrunch, shows two fans who get more than friendly when both simultaneously grab for the chips.
The controversy surrounding CBS' indecision is, perhaps, more controversial than the ad itself. Though the men get physical, they never really kiss—their lips strategically hidden behind each other's hands and heads. A symbolic reading of the signs hanging above them ("Equipment Starts and Stops Automatically", "No Entry", an arrow pointing directly into an ass), decodes telling innuendo, as their friend looks on in a combination of repulsion, fascination, and shock. Its faux-sexuality is a silent proclamation of "NO HOMO".
Despite the debate, it no longer matters if the commercial airs. Already available online and bolstered by its own buzz, the ad now readily reaches its niche market without ManCrunch spending a cent on the astronomical cost of a Super Bowl time slot. Maybe next year the world will be ready for some hot, man-on-man service-shilling action.
