Craigslist Stars in the New HBO Series Bored to Death
Together-at-last trio Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis, and Ted Danson star in Bored to Death, a new HBO comedy series based on a Jonathan Ames story from his collection The Double Life Is Twice As Good.
Bored to Death follows a fictionalized Jonathan Ames (Schwartzman), a Brooklyn-based suspense-novel writer who is dumped by his girlfriend because he pays too much attention to drinking white wine and smoking pot and not enough attention to her and writing. Seems fair.
What's this down-on-his-luck fellow do? Turn to Craigslist, of course. But Jonathan doesn't troll for Missed Connections or seek out a Casual Encounter: he pimps himself out as a private detective. He is a suspense-novelist, after all. And fiction is sometimes more appealing than reality.
To his considerable surprise, Jonathan is hired by desperate clients to solve a variety of cases that he pursues while avoiding working on his second novel and while writing occasionally for a magazine (run by eccentric editor George Christopher (Danson). He also passes time with—and sometimes enlists the help of—his pal Ray (Galifianakis), a cartoonist.
Guest stars on the first season include Olivia Thirlby, Heather Burns, Kristen Wiig, Parker Posey, Bebe Neuwirth, Oliver Platt, Patton Oswalt, Jim Jarmusch and John Hodgman.
