Why is Jimmy Wales, the do-little founder of Wikipedia, cochair the annual World Economic Forum on the Middle East? The event is the "foremost global gathering of political, business and cultural leaders," according to the organizers. Wales was chosen for the "contribution [he has made] globally, regionally or within [his] industry... His expertise in terms of business, knowledge etc. is the important thing here, not necessarily any knowledge of the region... At present the gossip and allegations directed towards Mr. Wales remain just that — gossip and allegation — and as such, the Forum has no comment." What gossip and allegation are they referring to? Something like this, perhaps:

Before he split with Canadian journalist Rachel Marsden, Wales talked about taking her with him — first class, of course — to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, where the event will take place. I wonder if he ever mentioned that to organizers, and who, if anyone, he'll squire in her stead.

I don't know why people think Jimmy is undeserving of this co-chair position. The root of the most serious and persistent problems in the Middle East is Islamic cultism.

David Koresh = Dead

Jimmy Jones = Dead

Charles Manson = In jail

L. Ron Hubbard = Dead (or busy being Suri Cruise, depending on what one believes)

Tom Cruise = Making movies

Who else would be available and adequately qualified to speak on this topic?

Woah, woah. I was never, at any point, going to go with Jimmy to this event, nor was the opportunity ever offered to me. Is Ahmadinejad going to be there? If so, then I'm all for Jimmy offering up some Wikipedia cult members as suicide bombers at the event. (Just tell them he's a "troll" who has been editing his own Wikipedia "biography".) Now THAT would be a REAL contribution to humanity.

@Pikers: No, Ron Paul is more of an accidental political cult figure. Big difference. He even had the hookers at Dennis Hof's Bunny Ranch offering to "pimp for Paul" and give 2-fer-1ers, with proceeds going to his campaign. When asked about it on TV, RP was like WTF whatever.

Perhaps Mark Zuckerberg could chair the next conference. He certainly made more money than Jimmy, i.e., he's a better businessman than Jimmy, and he can put a "face" on the protagonists.
