The software that allows programmers to build third-party software for the iPhone will be delayed one to three weeks beyond its February 2008 ship date. Shipping delays have become de rigueur for the company: In January, the Apple TV 2.0 software upgrade was delayed by two weeks. Last April, Apple announced it would be delaying the release of its next generation operating system to October because of the iPhone's pending release. No reasoning was given this time, but we wonder if Apple has sufficient human capital to turn all of Steve Jobs's fantasies into reality. (Photo by AP/Paul Sakuma)

The Apple guy would have been in deep trouble had he disclosed anything, a violation that would have merited termination (and possible legal action).

When I worked at a Fortune 500 Sillycon Valley high-tech firm, there was no way that some random employee knew anything about unreleased product. Chances are the guy doesn't know a thing.

Apple does a pretty good job keeping its plans confidential. If I recall correctly, I remember reading some article about the almost insane measures that Apple took to keep anyone from seeing the finished product. Hardware and software engineering teams were kept segregated.

The other possibility is they are trying to get the SDK to work with a major firmware update.

Yes yes two-week delays for a couple of things, maybe, and a few month delay for one thing means delays are now "de rigeur" at Apple. Really quite comparable to Microsoft, where Vista was several years late, stripped of much-hyped features, and is universally derided as a dud.

Gotta go, the zunephone is ringing, maybe they're calling to tell me when my Xbox 360 will be fixed.

One possibility is the SDK is late because Apple is trying to get it to work on prototype next-generation iPhone/iPod touch hardware.
