Author Doris Lessing accepted her award for the Nobel Prize for Literature last night. Although she took a small potshot at the Pope, it was much more gracious than the scene that ensued when she first heard the news back in October. We're still recovering from the YouTube video: "Have you heard the news? You've won the Nobel Prize for Literature," a reporter says. Lessing waves her hand dismissively: "Oh, Christ, I couldn't care less. It's been going on now for thirty years," she says, adding, "I'm sure you'd like some uplifting remarks of some kind." But there are none to be had! Her initial remarks follow, but they sound even better with the English accent, which is why you really have to watch the video.

"But this is a recognition of your life's work," the reporter argues.

"Yeees..." she says, getting more and more amused. "What do you think I should say? You tell me what to say and I'll say it!"

"Do it mean anything to you to win a prize?"

"Look, I've won all the prizes in Europe, every bloody one, so I'm delighted to win them all."

Lessing has written about a million books since 1949, including The Grass is Singing and The Golden Notebook.
