The Gorakhpur Express passenger train, as it was heading toward Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, crashed into a parked freight train near Basti in an accident that has reportedly killed over thirty people and injured over fifty.
The accident happened earlier on Monday on the day that Narendra Modi was being sworn into office as India's fifteenth Prime Minister. Reports from the scene revealed differences in believed death tolls, while officials claimed that there were still rescue efforts underway.
"People are saying this based on their own assessment. There are lot of people inside the coaches who need to be rescued first," said CPRO, Ner, Alok Kumar Singh.
Officials say that the passenger train had derailed.
The new Prime Minister himself expressed his condolences over Twitter for the loss of life at Basti:
My condolences to families of those who lost their lives in the Gorakhdham express tragedy. Prayers with the injured.
