Monday Morning Box Office: Five Movies Unlikely To Merit Consideration For Next Year's Oscars
We're always a little surprised that studios and exhibitors don't halt all operations in solemn observance of Oscar weekend, but we suppose that even Hollywood ostensibly pauses to celebrate excellence in its field, it still needs to make sure people have access to the crap that keeps it in business. On to the box office numbers!
1. Ghost Rider—$19.7 million
This fun statistic courtesy of Box Office Mojo: In collecting $78.7 million in its first ten days of release, Ghost Rider has topped Constantine (Remember Keanu Reeves? Whatever happened to that guy?) as "the highest-grossing hell-themed comic book movie." That's going to make some really compelling copy to stretch across the two-page self-congratulatory ad Sony's going to buy in the trades tomorrow.
2. The Number 23—$15.107 million
This result has to be a profound disappointment for New Line (not getting to $23 million is particularly embarrassing), who really thought they had an awareness-raising winner in that viral Frozen Dead Baby campaign.
3. Bridge to Terabithia—$13.574 million
We have literally no idea what Bridge is about, but here's IMDb's succinct explanation: "Fifth grader Jesse Aaron's hopes of becoming the fastest runner in his class are dashed when new girl Leslie Burke outruns everybody, including him. However, Jess and Leslie soon begin a friendship, and discover a magical kingdom in the forest, where the two of them reign together as king and queen." We hope you feel as enlightened about the latest in children's fantasy movies as we do after reading that.
4. Reno 911! Miami—$10.4 million
If there were any justice in the world, Reno's porn-mustachioed, nut-huggered cops would be standing atop the box office pile this weekend. Alas, we all know that there is no justice in this business.
5. Norbit—$9.736 million
Eddie Murphy might not have that Oscar, but at least he's got a mildly disappointing™ fat suit movie in the top 5! We're sure that will be a comfort to him on this blue Monday, as he comtemplates having a total nervous breakdown.
