As you've undoubtedly heard, the New York City Council is trying to crack down on underage drinking in the wake of the death of 18-year-old Jennifer Moore, who was killed after a night of imbibing at Chelsea club Guest House. But the Columbia Spectator editorial board isn't having it—if Columbia students want to drink, they WILL DRINK, goddammit.

A more stringent enforcement of drinking age laws will not curb underage drinking, but rather drive it to other, less-regulated locations. College and high school students will likely spend more money on better fakes or resort to drinking in dorms and apartments where it is more difficult for the city to ensure their safety. The council's time would be better spent focusing on general issues of safety and security in bar and nightclub neighborhoods. If it does not make this issue its primary concern, the council risks crafting legislation that will not effectively keep students safe in the city.

Yes, please, City Council, please do anything to keep Columbia students going to bars and clubs in this city!
