MTV: Valuable Patron To Burgeoning Fratboy Art Scene
They may be pinching pennies when it comes to paper and pens, but MTV Networks isn't afraid to toss around the big bucks for the things that matter. The company just announced the newest recipients of its Labs Seed Money - "tax-free grants awarded to MTV Networks employees to further their private creative work" - and one of the lucky winners happens to be Ryan Kitson of Nickelodeon Creative Resources, who was given five grand to
construct three huge pieces for his "Chief Sculpture" exhibit this Spring in a Chelsea gallery. Ryan has long been struck by how acts of "chiefing" — decorating and balancing furniture on top of drunken students passed out in a college dorm (the practice is also known as Drunk Jenga) — share many formal qualities of abstract expressionist sculpture of the 50s and 60s. Actually Ryan has made quite a name for himself in sculpting circles for works as imaginative and strange as this one.
Nice work, Giacometti! Don't spend it all in one bar.
