Overly Botoxed Wilma And Betty To Reunite For First Time In 40 Years To Pay Tribute To Joseph Barbera
The icy knuckle of the Hollywood Grim Reaper has rapped on the door of two men who have given us endless hours of classic TV animation: 81-year-old Chris Hayward, the Dudley Do-Right and Bullwinkle writer and co-creator of The Munsters, passed away Nov. 20, his widow just revealed, while news has hit the wires that Joseph Barbera died today at age 96. In memory of Hayward, here is a Dudley Do-Right clip, which despite being dubbed into Portuguese (we think—though we're sure you'll let us know if we're wrong!) speaks volumes about the universality of his comic gifts. (Concussion-based humor really transcends language.) In honor of Joe, meanwhile, we offer the above cigarette ad featuring the cast of The Flintstones puffing away on Winstons. Of course, we're required to mention that the Rule of Threes suggest another TV animation pioneer won't be long for this world—if we were Matt Stone or Trey Parker, we'd probably avoid flying in the coming months if at all possible.
UPDATE: A reader informs us the Rule of Threes has already been fulfilled, as Martin Nodell, creator of the Green Lantern and the Pillsbury Dough Boy (who famously joined forces in crossover issue #278, "The Ring And The Dinner Crescent,") died Dec. 9 at age 91.
