As If Interning Weren't All About Being Buttraped
Great piece in the Post today on interns, many of whom suffer terrible indignities for little or no pay. I know, can you believe it? The story, written by Veronica Thew and Christopher Cassuto (we want to know which one came up with the line, "The devil, it seems, doesn't always wear Prada;" it's both humorous and timely!) is full of anecdotes from actual interns about the actual abuse they've endured. This one caught our eye:
"I was a student intern at a local medical school, where I did basic clerical duties. I'm an outgoing person, so I was always very friendly, and within the first week my boss mentioned that there was a discount for employees at a bar down the street, and invited me to get a drink after work. And once that happened, it sort of broke down all barriers.
"He started talking about how a couple of guys in our offices and the offices that we worked with were gay. Then all of the sudden he said, 'and you know, I'm gay too.' Then he was like, 'Don't tell anybody, because I haven't even told my parents yet.' I thought, 'This is sort of a big thing to be admitting to your summer intern.' This is also after a number of occasions where he'd asked me not only to drinks, but also to come over to his apartment to watch movies and stuff.
How best to convey the horror of that moment, when an actual, self-acknowledged homosexual asks you to come over and catch a flick with him? Here's how the Post handled it:
Wow. We were a little unclear on the whole thing at first, but seeing that photo it suddenly all made sense: That guy wanted to fuck him up the ass!
Nice work, everybody. Looking forward to the story on hairdressers and how some of them might be "that way."
