Great Moments in Journalism: Nuts
Support for Great Moments in Journalism comes from Archer Daniels Midland and the nominations of readers like you. Send them here.
We're going to give you a fair bit of warning before we bring in today's nominee. In fact, the piece itself, from Virginia's Hampton Roads Daily Press, opens this way: "The following story contains graphic imagery of an issue that is playing out in Virginia's justice system and in other states." Hmm, sounds pretty interesting, right? Well, let's just say that if you're a guy, you might want to think twice before you click on the jump. And, spoiler alert, by "twice" we're making a subtle reference to your 'nads. Still intrigued? Go on.
Matt Sabo's "Castration or civil commitment?" chronicles the agonizing decision of Jim Jenkins, child molester. Sabo pulls you in right from the start, with "Jim Jenkins walked alone into the jailhouse shower stall. He had an apple, a shoelace and a razor blade." But here's what makes this story truly award-worthy:
The night of Oct. 28 was a reckoning point for Jenkins. He had the will, and this time he had a razor blade.
He also had incentive.
The next morning a judge would determine if Jenkins should be confined at the Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation in Petersburg - possibly for life - as a sexually violent predator. Already a sex offender assessment had him pegged as a predator who would strike again.
But he believed he could exorcise the deviant sexual fantasies that had left a path of ruined lives in their wake, he said.
Jenkins threaded the shoelace around the top of his scrotum and jerked the ends of the shoelace tight.
"I was convinced that was the only salvation for me," Jenkins would say later. "I had to think about my testicles versus life in prison."
Yeah, we still haven't uncrossed our legs either. Sorry, fellas. We promise tomorrow will be much less deballifying.
