Did Anna Wintour Remove the 'Cargo' Feeding Tube?
Late yesterday afternoon, the brutal lords of Condé Nast pulled the plug on woefully misguided shopping mag Cargo — and the people, well, barely shrugged. In the aftermath, Women's Wear Daily asks today why Condé hadn't given Cargo another shot with a new editor. In the months since publisher Lance Ford's August arrival, word was the Cargo would be perking up:
Since coming onboard, Ford — an old buddy of Richard Beckman's — has been telling advertisers they could expect to see Cargo move in a more up-market, fashion-centric direction, according to sources in the men's market.
So what happened? Just a guess: Anna Wintour, protective of dewy hatchlings Jay Fielden and Men's Vogue, had all that Vogue-threatening up-market fashion talk quickly silenced. Conde is her henhouse, bitches.
