Jack Twist's Wheels Hit Ebay
We must admit, Randy Quaid's lawsuit made us lonesome for the good ol'Brokeback Mountain days, when the Jake and Heath posts came in bushels and bloggers grew rich off the fat of the gay-cowboy-joke land. Sadly, things have slowed to a near trickle since the Oscars, though we can always rely on supreme Brokeback chronicler Towleroad for a nugget here and there, such as this eBay auction for Jack Twist's truck:
OFFERED FOR AUCTION this authentic 1950 GMC half-ton pickup used in the Academy Award winning movie BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. This flat black truck was featured in the beginning of the movie driven by character Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). It is seen when Jack first meets Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and again when the characters part after their summer on Brokeback Mountain. It is seen again when Jack meets future wife Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway).
Yes, your Anne Hathaway's-goodies-ogling memory does serve you correctly: This was the very truck in which audiences were treated to nearly a full minute of unobstructed Hathaway.* You would think that scene alone would help push up bids, which seem to have sputtered and stalled somewhere around the $8,000 mark—nowhere near the $100,000 the Brokeback shirts sold for. Those, however, were infused with a great amount of emotional significance. Had the truck played a similar role—perhaps in a final scene that saw Ennis pulling out the dipstick, and examining its oily residue for a moment before pulling it close to his chest for a tender embrace—it probably could have hit six-figure bids, too.
*UPDATE: A Brokeback scholar informs us that Hathaway goes on display in a four-door sedan, not the truck. No wonder it's only going for $8,000.
