In an item that we're not at all suspicious was planted by a publicist trying to build buzz in the couple of weeks leading up to The Showbiz Show's second season premiere, Rush & Molloy report that host David Spade's on-air digs at Jennifer Aniston have angered both ex-husband Brad Pitt and current tabloid partner Vince Vaughn:

"Brad told him he'd had enough," says a source. "Spade must have been worried that his social life would be affected. His material has been decidedly softer since." [...]

According to another source, the "Wedding Crashers" star happened to come upon a run-through that Spade was doing with his staffers from his Comedy Central show.

"You guys are having a lot of 'fun' over there, aren't you?" Vaughn asked Spade sarcastically.

We hear that Spade, who's said he didn't care who he offended in Hollywood, reassured the much-brawnier actor that the gags didn't reflect his true feelings about Jennifer's misery.

"But Vaughn refused to let it go," says a source. "He kept repeating his taunting over and over. The tension was thick. Spade was squirming under the stares of the writers and assistants."

eps for Vaughn and Pitt both deny that their clients menaced Spade. Says Pitt's rep: "David and Brad are friends."

If the Showbiz team really wants us to believe that the suddenly "edgy" host really doesn't care who gets caught in the crossfire of his weekly pillowfight, they probably need to concoct a confrontation less fraught with physical menace that the Spade-Vaughn mismatch. A couple of nights before the show's premiere, look for a "defiant" Spade to bravely battle Renee Zellweger to a draw in a slapfight at the Chateau Marmont.
