We don't know what it is about this day in particular, but apparently today, Wednesday the 15th of February, is the preferred day for respectable newspapers to launch blogs. Perhaps it's the hangover from Valentine's Day self-loathing — we've found that depression and emotional darkness tend to lead to blogging. Whatever the case, both the Times and the Observer have launched new blogs today: Frank Bruni's Diner's Journal and the appropriately pink Bridal Blog, respectively.

So what can we expect from our new professional bloggers? Bruni writes:

This new blog is an attempt to capture and share more of my notes from the field. To provide, in something closer to real time, a sense of what s being served in the city s newest, oldest, most delightful and most frustrating restaurants and of how those restaurants are serving it. To flag trends and, less often and more selectively, flog underachievers. To report moments of real significance and incidents that just happened to be interesting. To keep a journal, and to keep the tone of that journal light, casual, accessible.

Translation: "I read that New York blog bukkake article and realized that my coverage has fallen behind that of Snack and Slice. I will force myself to be breezy and fun, just like a real blog."

Over at the Observer's Bridal Blog, meanwhile, we've got Laurie, Aimee, and Kara, three brides-to-be chronicling the excitement of wedding planning. For example:

Have you started Weight Watchers yet? That s what my sister asked me when I told her I was having trepidation about wedding dress shopping. Even though I am a size 12, the average size for a woman in the United States, just trying to buy a simple pair of pants in Manhattan is a nightmare for me. Why would high-stakes bridal dress shopping be any different?

Translation: "I want to keep a wedding blog, but Livejournal isn't very pretty. I'll just do it on Observer instead."
