It's been rumored that over 80% of Flickr photos are porn. Blogger Eran Globen innocently wondered why he can't find the nakedness. "Where's all the boobies?" he asked.

Well, someone from Yahoo showed him. "Alice", claiming to be a Yahoo employee, left a comment on his blog:

I m a Yahoo employee who has worked with the Flickr team before. Off the record [in a public forum? — Ed.], I can say that there is no way that 90% of the photos on Flickr are pornography. I have a hard time believing that, based on the numbers I ve seen. That said, you aren t going to find most nude photos through public searches (ie: tag searches) because those are built on the public API which ignores all content may be inappropriate marked photos. Also, people who upload nudity on a regular basis are marked such that all their photos are excluded from public searches. So how do you find the porn? Groups are one way, since groups aren t filtered the same way images are. Otherwise there s the old hunt and peck methond. But yes, there are boobies out there :p

She linked "boobies" to a VERY NSFW photo from Flickr — definitely boobies, definitely two naked women just hanging out, non-porn-like, at a Flickr Fiesta in September. (What's fun is that no one at the Fiesta really seems to notice.)

So thanks, Yahoo, for the porn-searching tips, and for the non-porn boobies.

Where are they? [Eran on Supr.c.ilio.us]
