It seemed not like such a big deal back in September, when the announcement came that all the various Newhouse mag companies — Conde, Fairchild, Golf Digest — would become one big company under the Conde Nast umbrella, with each of the various old companies now a division of CNP.

But it was certainly a big deal to Mary Berner, who went from being president and CEO of Fairchild Publications to merely president of Fairchild division, reporting to CNP CEO Chuck Townsend.

So Berner announced today she's quitting; she's leaving at the end of the month. "Conde Nast is a great publishing company," she told Mediaweek's Lisa Granatstein, who broke the news, "but I want to run my own company again."

Golf Digest Cos. chief Mitch Fox — who similarly reports to Townsend — will supervise W and Fairchild's bridal group and B2Bs. Jane, Details, and Cookie go to Conde, which seems to be where they belong, anyway.

And we'll have to wait to see where Berner goes.
