City Says Mohels Should Cut It Out
Last year, if you'll recall, a Rockland County rabbi was going around giving orthodox Jewish babies herpes via a certain kind of circumcision practice that involves the mohel sucking blood from the newly snipped penis with his mouth. That dude's not doing it anymore, but, well, now there's more, according to today's News:
Two more babies have contracted herpes through an ancient circumcision rite, leading the city's top health official yesterday to release an open letter to the city's Orthodox Jewish community urging caution.
Now, we're all in favor of circumcision — they're really quite unattractive otherwise — but we agree that caution in this case might be a good idea. There are plenty of other methods, and, while infecting an eight-day-old with the herp is bad enough, imagine the guilt those parents will feel when little Moshe grows up to realize he has a taste for a man's mouth on his dick. Oy.
