LES JEWELS!
Braved the rain last night (10/8) to head over to the Back Room (new and improved Lansky Lounge). After getting over the fact everyone's drinking out of teacups, I look behind the bar to Tim Robbins slinging drinks and working the old school cash register. He seemed very mellow and quite methodical. When I asked about the "other" back room, he said it wasn't open yet (translation: you're never gonna see it).
10/9. An interesting collision: Spotted Noah Baumbach alone at the Angelika on Sunday afternoon, casually photographing a line of people waiting to enter a showing of The Squid and the Whale. No one else seemed to recognize him until Meryl Streep pretty, small, baseball-capped, and polite swept past Noah and pointed him out to a companion who was most likely her son. Later I remembered that Heartburn, which was apparently filmed in the Baumbachs Park Slope kitchen twenty years ago, starred the same Ms. Streep. I guess that doesn t necessarily mean she had to say hello to Noah, but maybe they could've chatted about how weird it was to see that kitchen on film again years later, etc.
Thursday afternoon around 5ish in cab on 70th and as we crossed Lexington my driver nearly ran down Al Pacino. Scarface was getting ready to ride shotgun in a chauffer driven black Yukon that was parked outside of a phat brownstone. He s pretty short and gave my driver the finger as we sped by.
While doing research work Friday night, saw Josh Harnett, Scarlett Johansson, and a friend walking down Prince St. He's a lot better looking in person, and she is really short.
I just wanted to let you know that last week David Bowie and his beautiful wife Iman were spotted dining at the new Chemist Club Grill located in the Dylan Hotel the two were both eating chef John Kaunas Grilled Filet of Wild King Salmon Tarragon & Mustard Glaze, topped with Mango-Cucumber-Red Onion and Tomato Relish and a side of Lobster Home Fries. [Ed: We're running this because this is a BLATANT EXAMPLE of why we don't want your publicist to send us stalker sightings. Mango-Cucumber-Who-Gives-a-Fuck — for shame!]
Early Saturday evening (10/8) at Mercer Kitchen, an all black-clad Katie Couric with younger-looking male companion, Seth (perhaps the Dr. Seth Neubardt outed in Monday's Page Six?). She was in a seemingly good mood and left with him for "another bar" after a single drink, her lime green Birkin bag in tow.
Saw Bono, wearing sunglasses at 7pm, going into Babbo on Sunday (10/9) night. He's really much shorter than one might imagine. The Edge was also there, talking on his cell phone.
Was in 3rd row at U2 Friday night and standing right in front of the first row was Dennis Leary with his ubiquitous leather jacket, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and a really fucking hot looking Gina Gershon. People gawked, but no one really approached them.
Saw youngish and fit-looking William H. Macy riding a bike along the sidewalk in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday. He s here shooting a film.
Saw Willem Dafoe and his pretty Italian bride at the 7.30 showing of Good Night, and Good Luck at Union Square on Sunday night. He's as twee as you might expect, but far less wrinkled. I think he enjoyed himself; I know I did.
Grim-faced Oliver Stone on sidewalk at 9th and 39th, Friday afternoon (10/7). He's a very solid 6' — I wouldn't want to tussle with him! Was heading downtown with swiftness, flanked by clipboard clutching PAs. Scouting locations for next film, perhaps. Also gawked (met, actually) legendary Tony Curtis at that MoMA screening last Thurs (9/29). Barely recognizable, but gracious to fans.
Lauren Bush walking into the Dean and Deluca on Prince & Broadway. I was shocked, absolutely shocked by how short she is. Isn't she a model? Anyway, her hair was a mess and she was dressed rather frumpy but she has an absolutely gorgeous face. She was with another guy that I didn't recognize. Later that day on Prince & Wooster, I spotted a very frail Frankie Muniz. I knew the kid was tiny but he looks like a crack addict these days. After we passed one another I turned around to verify it was him and got caught gawking as he was looking back at me. Oops.
Saw Tommy Hilfiger breeze into Pastis around midnight on Saturday night trying to get a table for dinner. He had shoulder length blown-out hair and was with a tall blond. Guess that s where you go to celebrate cutting 135 jobs from your company
Saw Tara Subkoff today in the Gramercy park area with a female friend. Tara looked beautiful and surprisingly stopped and took a photo with me.
On Wednesday afternoon at around 5:00, I saw Lenny Kravitz standing on the corner of Elizabeth and Houston for about five minutes waiting to put an Asian woman in a taxi. What a gentleman. Afterwards he hopped into a chauffeured Mercedes-Benz g55 AMG.
Saw Rachel Hunter on the UES Friday afternoon walking on 76th and Lex with a girl friend. Was wearing a mini skirt and furry wookie boots and a cop stood in the door of his patrol car and shouted across the street, I KNOW THAT S RACHEL HUNTER and let out a war whoop
I was coming up out of the F train station at 57th street and couldn't help but peer into the De La Cocha smoke shop where men who take themselves quite seriously sit at tiny tables in the window and smokes to their heart's content. Who should I see but Reverend Al Sharpton puffing on a big ol' stogie! Made me jump, for some reason.
So Sunday, 10/9 must have been everyone's day to appreciate the end of the 24-hour downpour because folks were out in force. After seeing Thumbsucker at the Union Square Cinema, my friend and I were walking west on 12th street around 5:15 when we spotted a taller than expected and looking quite lean Isaac Mizrahi walking his dog between 6th and 7th Aves. He seemed in a good mood and was dawdling about, whistling, and wearing what looked to be track pants and his trademark headkerchief.
Visiting from waaaaaay out of town (Sydney, Australia), my first day in the city yielded three celeb sightings (and I'm heading out for dinner, so maybe it ain't over yet!). Jonathan Rhys Meyers of Bend it Like Beckham/Velvet Goldmine fame was on Broadway near Houston this morning, blending in with the hordes. Later in the day, saw Julianna Margulies walking along Prince towards W. Broadway sporting huge shades despite the cloudy day.
Held the door open for a surprisingly amazonianesque Minnie Driver as she exited Starbucks w/male friend. She is really quite pretty when compared to us mere humans. Had on some funky gypsy-type outfit w/the obligatory cowboy boots (girls, drop the look, drop it NOW!). She is very freckly and really does have some pretty eyes on her. Still blown away by how tall she was!
Sat across from Amy Poehler on the 1 train for about ten stops on 10/5. Couldn't place the face right away - she blended right in as she toe-tapped her way through some songs on her ipod. I noticed the enormous rock on her left hand and the silver converse high tops she was wearing before I noticed who she was. She hopped off at 50th St. Probably on her way to a taping?
Leslie Stahl getting in to a cab on Columbus and 73rdish on Sunday, wearing red espadrilles with panty hose (!) and some sort of strange red cotton-y skirt.
I rarely notice celebs at the gym, but one guy stood out last Thursday Oct 6 at The Gym on e26th. It was Matthew Modine from the late 80's movie GROSS ANATOMY!!! He was walking on the treadmill, and walked by me on the way to the water fountain... very friendly dude said hello and smiled. BTW, noticed he was in the NY Post this morning with a picture of him showing he gets his blonde hair highlighted...guys his age still do that????
Big week: Wednesday 10/4 on Essex Street saw Amanda Lepore strolling around like she wasn't a tranny icon.
Thursday 10/5 on Bleeker Street while I was passing out fliers for my comedy show, Graham Norton passed going to his own comedy show.
Friday 10/6 at The Biltmore for Absurd Person Singular saw Kathleen Turner and Holland Taylor sitting next to each other and John "Cousin Ira" Pankow sitting behind me.
I was attending the 9:30PM show of ASSSSCAT last night at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre. The theater was filling up and there were two seats taped off in the front row under the name Chris Barrett. About 5 minutes before show time Efren Ramirez and Chris Barrett came walking across the front of the stage and sat front and center at the show. Everyone was whispering "there's Pedro". I got to sit behind them and they seemed to have a great time at the show, but who doesn't. It's by far the best Improv show in New York City.
Crossed paths with a hunky Scott Speedman at dusk today (Sunday 10/9) around 8th and University. Amazingly piercing blue eyes, made me do a double take and hankering to watch some Felicity reruns. Holla.
I saw Carlos Leon at the Times Square 1/9 platform going uptown, looking to be recognized but no one did but me, and I didn't care.
October 6, I was crossing Madison going East, and I recognized a little girl in a stroller as Sasha Seinfeld. Then I looked up and it was her mother, Jessica, pushing her. She had sought of a scared look on her face like, "I hope nobody recognizes us." I looked right at her. Not to be cruel (yeah, right) but she's no Shoshanna. I guess Jerry just wanted a "breeder". I still can't believe this woman married TWO millionaires. Go figya!
Thursday evening, 10/6, we saw Aerin Lauder standing in front of the Pierre Hotel at 61st and Fifth. She had two small children in tow, which presumably explains why she was also holding a pair of red and blue balloon animals. Perhaps a kiddie benefit? She's very, very ordinary-looking. If I had a kajillion dollars, I'd have diamonds hanging off every body part I could attach them to, but different strokes. Anyway, it was raining, and she seemed to be working out a transportation issue.
Walking to the subway Thursday morning, whom did I see but Trey Anastasio, former frontman of Phish, walking along 77th St. accompanied by an unknown female. Walking west on 77th, the couple proceeded to turn left on Lexington Ave., where I lost sight of them (had to get on the train!).
I had two celebrity sightings tonight! Okay, minor celebrities, but I was excited nonetheless. While waiting on line for the secret Kiki and Herb show at Joe's Pub tonight Clinton Kelly from "What Not to Wear" came walking out. He was impeccably snazzy, of course, in a pinstriped tie with a pocket square, very tall and cute, laughing with another tall cute gay guy. I wanted to say hi but I was dressed like a total schlub at the time. And then at the Kiki and Herb show, I spotted John Cameron Mitchell, sitting at one of the banquettes with a bunch of friends. He's tiny and adorable.
10/6 - apparently Curtis Sliwa lives in my building....came home after a night of binge drinking to find him, red beret & all, standing outside and talking on the phone. As if he wasn't enough of a marked man, he feels the need to wear a red jacket & matching beret? What kind of sense does that make? Anyhow he seemed to be having a nice chat as he was smiling and laughing as he talked. Seemed nice, but if I were him I d have my back to a wall at all times....
Spotted LES Jewels hanging on the fence of Bull McCabe's on Wednesday night. He was with the token female from the group, who looked too good to be a heroin addict. Give her time. Also, he's very annoying. He's a celebrity now.
