Thirteen people were shot Thursday night at a park in Chicago, including a three-year-old boy who was shot in the head. Twelve of the 13 victims remain hospitalized, including five in serious or critical condition, with the 3-year-old the most seriously injured.

The three-year-old was identified by family members as Deonta' Howard, or Tay Man as he was more often called. The Chicago Tribune reports that Howard was shot in the ear, with the bullet exiting through his mouth, though he did not suffer brain damage, according to the boy's pastor.

Howard's uncle, a Chicago rapper named Jerome “J Money” Wood, was shot to death on Labor Day, just two weeks ago. “I can’t catch a break,” the boy's aunt, 18-year-old Lavada Hardeman told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Sun-Times reports that a woman identified as the boy's grandmother — and the deceased rapper's mother—was at the crime scene, berating police. “You . . . . cops can’t solve shit,” she said.

Two teenagers were also injured in Thursday night's shooting, which, according to the Chicago Tribune, took place at 10:15 p.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Chicago police have not released any information about the shooting, except to say that it appears to be gang-related.

Julian Harris, a witness and one of Howard's uncles, described the scene to the Sun-Times.

“They hit the light pole next to me but I ducked down and ran into the house,” Harris said. “They’ve been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night — just gang-banging stuff. It’s what they do.”
