We often lament the existence of August, a month that seems devoid of anything besides humidity, stench, and boredom. Recent weeks, however, have had at least a modicum of action:

For a while, though, it was starting to seem like New York was getting unseasonably interesting. About two weeks ago there was a scare that downtown New York was being hit by some sort of killer heroin after two young college students were found dead. Four other people followed. Although it is rare for someone to die from a heroin overdose alone, (at least according to what I ve read), junkies and public health advocates were starting to wonder if there really was a bad batch going around, a la the China White scare of the 1990s.

Alas, we now know that the college students died of the typical speedballs and the NYC IS EDGY movement was but a dream. Who knew that August of 2005 could possibly less cool than the fucking 90s?
