David Brooks: I'd rather be right than have health care. Sure, subsidized education and socialized medicine sound all right, but they will cause you to vote against the European constitution for all the wrong reasons. Let David Brooks tell you what's good for you.

Bob Herbert: LBJ and Nixon got piss-drunk on deceit and wrapped America around the telephone pole of misinformation. George Bush is on his tenth cocktail of lies and he won't give anyone else the keys.

David is clearly encroaching on Friedman's territory here. And Bob's stab at framing his column with tangential references to Vietnam and Deep Throat doesn't hide the fact that it's a cut-and-paste recap of stuff he found on dailyKos last week. Embarrassing, really. I kept checking Byron Calame's not-a-blog to see if Okrent had come back from "retirement" to settle any old scores. Oh, they had personalities then!

Vaguely interesting note: the letters page features a HuffPo post by Paul Rieckhoff — I know the guy's a tortured, John Rambo-like veteran worthy of our respect and gratitude, but dammit, he looks like Jim Anchower.-AP
